Description:
Architecture Porpose for Renovation for Lavapiés, Madrid
Woth Honors 2021
Project:
This project proposes a radical transformation of Lavapiés, using domesticity as a political tool to address the problem of substandard housing that plagues the neighborhood and its inhabitants. The masterplan is designed not just to reshape physical spaces but to rethink what we need to live in the city, particularly in this area of Madrid, and to reconfigure community interactions.
Demolishing Lavapiés to build new structures would strip the neighborhood of its cultural value. Instead, this initiative understands the area as not only a dense urban fabric but also a social neural network comprising diverse communities currently mismatched with the city's administration, logistics, and minimal to massive privatization. The project begins with a theoretical action by residents to join their homes and redistribute spaces and buildings, enhancing their condition to be more fluid, continuous, versatile, and mutable.
The aim is to create a communal living room that transcends the current social, cultural, and architectural rigidity, fostering non-normative spaces that rely on community and familial structures as the primary building materials. Emphasizing a circular economy, the project will recycle structures, internal walls, access points, and courtyard light.
The plan includes a total opening of party walls and facades facing public roads and courtyards, integrating spaces internally and with the outside. Given economic constraints, the construction method will involve simple techniques like using steel profiles to replace load-bearing walls. Inside, the layout optimizes domestic activities by sharing kitchen, work, and bathroom spaces, providing homes with varying levels of privacy—from single beds to communal kitchens, leaving some activities communal.
Innovative uses not feasible in privatized minimal homes—like soundproof rooms, workshops, meeting rooms, multipurpose spaces, and gyms—will be shared, enhancing communal living. This project encourages collaboration, supports new forms of relationships like polyamory, breaks away from traditional media hierarchies, and challenges individualistic systems in Lavapiés.
