Apartment Renovation
Project:
Located in a prestigious area of Málaga, close to the beach and city center, this project revitalizes Mediterranean architecture from a contemporary perspective, aiming to infuse local significance into a historic residential complex, Casas de Cantó (built between 1949 and 1951). The design philosophy, termed "Neomediterranean" by the architect, integrates traditional materials such as Alicante tilework and local pine with modern design elements to create a sophisticated and comfortable living space.
The residence has been reimagined to create a structured and fluid space, enhancing the sense of spaciousness in the small apartment by reopening the openings in the existing load-bearing walls. The distinctive materials include wood, used for comfort areas, and tilework, designated for wet areas. The kitchen, with its sea-facing island, plays with the composition and structural integrity of the original building, allowing free movement and optimal cross-ventilation.
The bathroom is concealed behind a tiled door that allows light to filter into the shower when closed. Inside, raw marble sinks crafted by a local artisan bring a touch of natural ruggedness indoors. Meanwhile, the bedroom, with its east-facing bed, is framed by a headboard positioned opposite a curtain that conceals the wardrobe.
Original furniture pieces from the home have been restored, and exclusive new pieces have been designed, incorporating details inspired by the ornamental railings of the building. The house thus seeks to establish a dialogue between contemporary design and its traditional surroundings.
